Where it came from
The Phantasmal Bear was originally printed as part of the 2011 Magic 2012 core set before being featured in the 2014 Duel Decks: Jace vs. Vraska product. This release was designed to capitalize on the popularity of the game's two iconic planeswalkers, Jace Beleren and Vraska the Unseen, providing players with pre-constructed decks that pitted blue-aligned control strategies against black-green removal and assassin-themed mechanics.
The card's artwork, illustrated by Jesper Ejsing, portrays the creature as a translucent, spectral entity, emphasizing the 'Illusion' creature type that defines its mechanical identity. In game terms, the card is noted for its high power and toughness relative to its low mana cost, a benefit offset by its fragile nature; it is sacrificed whenever it becomes the target of a spell or ability, a design choice intended to represent the ephemeral quality of an illusion.
