Phantom Beast

Phantom Beast was introduced in the Magic 2011 core set, released in July 2010. As a staple common creature, it was designed to provide a straightforward blue-aligned threat for Limited play environments, embodying the color's thematic reliance on illusions and fragile, high-impact magic. Its mechanic, which forces the creature to be sacrificed upon becoming the target of a spell or ability, serves as a classic expression of the vulnerability often associated with 'phantom' or 'illusion' type creatures in the game's long-standing design philosophy.

The artwork was commissioned from illustrator Ryan Yee, known for his dynamic character designs within the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. Yee aimed to depict the beast as an ephemeral, translucent entity, visually communicating the card's mechanical fragility through a ghostly, shimmering aesthetic. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its utility in draft formats and for how effectively the visual design matched the mechanical trade-offs inherent in blue creature combat during that era of the game.
