Phantom Monster

Phantom Monster debuted in the Limited Edition Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering, released by Wizards of the Coast in 1993 as the foundation of the first collectible card game. Designed by Richard Garfield to evoke the flavor of classic fantasy bestiaries, the creature serves as an iconic example of the blue mana color identity, emphasizing evasion through its flying ability.

The card’s illustration was created by Jesper Myrfors, who served as the game’s first art director. His aesthetic contribution helped establish the moody, illustrative tone of early Magic, favoring traditional fantasy sensibilities that contrasted with the more polished digital art seen in later sets. The Unlimited Edition printing maintained this original artistic vision while serving as the primary way for new players to acquire these staples during the game's initial surge in popularity.
