Where it came from
Phone a Friend is a card from the 2022 Magic: The Gathering set Unfinity, which serves as the fourth installment in the franchise's long-running series of silver-bordered 'un-sets.' These cards are intentionally designed to exist outside the bounds of traditional gameplay rules, prioritizing humor, meta-referential mechanics, and experimental card types that would be difficult or impossible to balance in standard formats.
The card was designed to evoke the tension and camaraderie of televised trivia game shows, featuring mechanics that require the player to interact with someone outside the immediate game space. The visual identity of the set, including this card's nostalgic aesthetic, was shaped by Wizards of the Coast's creative team to capture a retro-futuristic, carnival-inspired atmosphere that distinguishes the Un-series from the more grounded, high-fantasy settings of mainline Magic expansions.
