Provenance

Where it came from

Released in 1998 as part of the Urza's Saga expansion, the Phyrexian Ghoul represents the macabre aesthetic of the Phyrexian faction within the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. Designed during a pivotal era for the game's lore, the set focused on the artificer Urza and his ongoing struggle against the biomechanical horrors of Phyrexia. The card mechanics, which allow the creature to consume other creatures to gain strength, were intended to reflect the parasitic and relentless nature of the Phyrexians.

The artwork was provided by Pete Venters, a prolific illustrator whose contributions helped define the visual identity of the game during the late 1990s. Venters leaned into a visceral, grotesque style to convey the creature's status as a reanimated, modified corpse. The design was well-received by players for its synergy with sacrifice-themed strategies, securing its place as a staple of the 'black-mana' color identity in both casual and limited formats.
