Phyrexian Rager

Phyrexian Rager first appeared in the Invasion expansion of 2000, designed as a common black creature that rewards the player with a card draw at the cost of a small amount of life. The design reflects the mechanics of the Phyrexians, a recurring faction in the Magic: The Gathering multiverse known for their willingness to sacrifice organic life for mechanical or strategic advantage. This particular iteration of the card, identified as number 266 in the 2020 Jumpstart set, features updated artwork that maintains the creature's menacing, grotesque aesthetic while adhering to the set's unique, randomized deck-building format.

The Jumpstart version of the card utilizes the classic 'draw a card, lose a life' ability that has made it a staple in limited play formats for decades. By including it in Jumpstart, Wizards of the Coast aimed to provide players with a familiar, reliable utility creature that fits seamlessly into the set's aggressive, synergy-focused gameplay environment. The card remains a quintessential example of black-aligned resource management, prized by players for its ability to cycle through the deck while establishing a board presence.
