Where it came from
Pia Nalaar, Chief Mechanic, was introduced as a reimagined legendary creature for the Aetherdrift Commander set, part of the Magic: The Gathering product line. The card honors the character of Pia Nalaar, a central figure in the Kaladesh storyline, depicting her in her role as a master inventor and leader of the resistance against the Consulate. The design focuses on her mechanical affinity, integrating the artifact-centric mechanics associated with her lore.
The card’s illustration continues the vibrant, clockwork-inspired aesthetic established in the Kaladesh block. Designed to function as a commander, the card emphasizes the synergy between artifact play and direct damage, reflecting the character’s resourceful combat style. Its release was met with appreciation from players who value thematic consistency, as it provides a distinct, utility-focused variant of the character that emphasizes her engineering expertise over her purely revolutionary identity.
