Where it came from
Pilgrim of the Fires was released in early 2015 as part of the Fate Reforged expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set focused on the fractured timeline of the Tarkir plane, exploring the history of the dragon-slaying khans before the arrival of the planeswalker Sarkhan Vol. This card represents a red-aligned creature from the Mardu Horde, a nomadic faction characterized by its speed, aggression, and affinity for fire magic, reflecting the set's narrative emphasis on the violent traditions of the plane's past.
The card's illustration was crafted by artist Kev Walker, a long-time contributor to the game known for his gritty, high-contrast style. Walker sought to capture the ferocious, elemental nature of the Mardu warrior, balancing the character's traditional armor with the volatile energy of the fire magic they wield. Upon its release, the card was viewed primarily as a functional addition for limited play formats, serving as a solid mid-tier creature that showcased the Mardu's signature dash mechanic.
