Where it came from
Pippin, Guard of the Citadel (218s) was released as part of the Magic: The Gathering 'The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth' set in 2023. This card features the special 'scene' treatment, designed to be placed alongside other cards from the set to create a larger, continuous piece of artwork depicting the battle at Minas Tirith. These promos were distributed through various promotional channels, including store events, to celebrate the integration of J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium into the game's Universes Beyond line.
The illustration was crafted by artist Xavier Ribeiro, who aimed to capture Pippin’s transition from a naive hobbit to a soldier serving in the White Tower. The aesthetic draws on the cinematic and literary descriptions of Gondorian armor, emphasizing a grounded, realistic interpretation of the character. Upon release, the scene cards were well received by collectors for their cohesive artistic vision, which prioritized the narrative flow of the iconic siege over traditional individual card framing.
