Where it came from
Pitiless Plunderer was first introduced in the 2018 expansion Rivals of Ixalan, set within the vibrant, Mesoamerican-inspired plane of Ixalan. It was designed as an uncommon black creature that mechanically rewards the player for the demise of their own creatures by providing Treasure tokens, reflecting the piratical and ruthless nature of the Brazen Coalition, the faction it represents in the game's lore.
The card features artwork by illustrator Johannes Voss, who utilized a high-contrast style to depict the Plunderer in a state of calculated avarice. Within the community, the card became widely recognized as a cornerstone of competitive Commander decks, particularly those relying on sacrifice engines, which eventually led to its inclusion in The List, a curated selection of reprints integrated into later booster pack sets to maintain availability for players.
