Where it came from
Plague Reaver was introduced in the 2020 Commander Legends expansion, a set uniquely designed to integrate the popular Commander format with a draftable limited experience. The card was created to serve as a high-risk, high-reward creature, utilizing a mechanics-heavy design that encourages table interaction by passing control of the card between players.
The card’s illustration, rendered by artist Johannes Voss, captures the grotesque and imposing nature of the reaver. Voss aimed to evoke the sense of a relentless, self-propagating threat, fitting the visual aesthetic of the set’s focus on legendary beings and epic narratives. Upon its release, it was noted by the community for its niche but strategically intriguing ability to disrupt board states.
