Provenance

Where it came from

Plague Spitter was released in the Invasion expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game in October 2000. As part of the set's focus on multicolored cards and the conflict between the Phyrexians and the coalition of Dominaria, the card represents the grotesque biological warfare characteristic of the Phyrexian aesthetic. It was designed as an artifact creature that provides a persistent damage effect, forcing players to manage their own life totals alongside the threat posed to opponents.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Carl Critchlow, whose distinct, painterly style helped define the darker, more visceral side of the set's visual identity. Critchlow’s design emphasizes the creature's parasitic nature, depicting a mutated entity that fits the Phyrexian theme of invasive, transformative horror. Upon its release, the card was recognized for its utility in limited formats and aggressive deck strategies, solidifying its place as a quintessential example of early 2000s era creature design.
