Where it came from
The Planar Atlas was released in late 2022 as part of the Jumpstart 2022 set for Magic: The Gathering. This artifact card was designed as a thematic inclusion for decks focused on exploration and planar travel, fitting within the set's unique structure, which is designed to allow players to quickly combine randomized thematic packets into a playable deck. The card's mechanics were built to facilitate mana ramp and library manipulation, reflecting the expansive nature of the multiverse as depicted in the game's lore.
The artwork for the Planar Atlas was created by illustrator Joseph Meehan, who is known for his atmospheric and detailed approach to fantasy landscape design. The piece aims to evoke a sense of navigation and cosmic scale, utilizing celestial motifs and intricate cartographic imagery to ground the artifact in the game's magical setting. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional utility piece, praised by players for its versatility in both casual Commander formats and the fast-paced, limited environment of the Jumpstart series.
