Provenance

Where it came from

Plated Geopede was originally released in the 2009 Zendikar expansion, an set centered on the mechanics of land-based exploration and the landfall ability. The card was designed to capitalize on aggressive strategies, rewarding players for consistently playing lands by boosting the creature's power and toughness. Its inclusion in the 2011 Duel Decks: Venser vs. Koth product marked its transition into a preconstructed format, where it served as a key offensive asset for the Koth deck.

The illustration for the card was provided by artist Dave Kendall, who depicted the creature as a rugged, insectoid entity armored with jagged plates consistent with the harsh landscape of the plane of Zendikar. The design was received favorably by players who favored red-based aggro decks, as it provided a high-impact, low-cost threat that maintained relevance throughout the early and mid-game stages of a match.
