Where it came from
Plumeveil was originally released in the Shadowmoor expansion in 2008 and later reprinted as part of the Commander 2011 product line. It belongs to the Kithkin creature type, a race of halfling-like beings central to the folklore of the Lorwyn and Shadowmoor sets. The card was designed to highlight the flash mechanic, allowing players to cast the creature at instant speed to provide an unexpected defensive presence on the battlefield.
The card features artwork by the illustrator Terese Nielsen, who was a prolific contributor to the game for many years. Her design for the Plumeveil centers on an ethereal, spectral elemental fused with a Kithkin soldier, intended to convey the dual nature of the creature as both a physical guardian and a magical apparition. Upon its release, it became a staple in defensive and tempo-oriented decks due to its efficiency as a surprise blocker.
