Polluted Bonds

Polluted Bonds was released in May 2008 as part of the Shadowmoor expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was designed to explore a darker, more melancholic version of the plane of Lorwyn, utilizing a theme centered around hybrid mana costs and untapped permanents. As a rare enchantment, the card was crafted to punish players for playing lands, serving as a distinct resource-denial tool within the game's evolving competitive landscape.

The artwork for Polluted Bonds was created by Michael Sutfin, whose visceral and gritty illustrative style became a staple of the era. Sutfin was tasked with visually conveying the oppressive, corrupting nature of the enchantment, resulting in an image that emphasizes decay and sinister stagnation.
