Where it came from
Preston, the Vanisher was introduced in the Jumpstart 2022 expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a product designed to facilitate quick, randomized play experiences, the set focused on specific tribal and mechanical themes. Preston was created as a mythic rare creature intended to anchor white-aligned decks revolving around the blink or flicker mechanic, where permanents are repeatedly exiled and returned to the battlefield to trigger enter-the-battlefield effects.
The card was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who utilized a high-fantasy aesthetic to depict the character’s ghostly, illusory nature. The design emphasizes the concept of displacement, creating a gameplay loop that rewards players for manipulating their own board state. Within the competitive community, the card was received as a versatile tool for Commander players, valued for its ability to generate token copies of nontoken permanents whenever they enter the battlefield under the player's control.
