Where it came from
Primeval Force was released in 1997 as part of the Portal base set, a standalone product designed by Wizards of the Coast to act as an entry point for new Magic: The Gathering players. The set utilized simplified mechanics and a distinctive, borderless art style to distinguish it from the standard releases of the time, aiming to lower the barrier to entry for those intimidated by the game's increasingly complex ruleset.
The card’s illustration, rendered by artist Eric Peterson, embodies the primal, high-fantasy aesthetic characteristic of the Portal era. It was designed to provide a straightforward, high-impact creature effect that showcased the game's green color identity. While Portal cards were initially viewed as a novelty by veteran players due to their restricted competitive legality, they have since gained historical significance as artifacts of the game's mid-nineties expansion and accessibility efforts.
