What it does
Each player puts a vow counter on a creature they control and sacrifices the rest. Each of those creatures can't attack you or planeswalkers you control for as long as it has a vow counter on it.

Where it came from
Promise of Loyalty was first introduced in the Commander 2015 set, designed for the multiplayer-focused Magic: The Gathering format. It reflects a recurring design philosophy in the Commander line, which emphasizes 'political' cards that force opponents to interact with one another or create structured incentives within a four-player game. By compelling players to choose creatures to protect while sacrificing others, the card encourages strategic table negotiation and dynamic board states.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, whose work is characterized by a high-fantasy, ethereal aesthetic. Voss sought to capture the gravity and somber weight of a formal vow, utilizing light and composition to emphasize the solemnity of the action. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the Commander community for its utility as a board-control tool that functions uniquely in a multiplayer environment, leading to its inclusion in subsequent supplemental sets like The List.
