Protean Hulk

Protean Hulk was released in 2006 as part of the Dissension expansion, the third set in the Ravnica: City of Guilds block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Designed during an era when the game was heavily focused on multicolor interactions, the card represents the Simic Combine, a faction defined by their biological experimentation and evolution. Mechanically, the card was intended to embody the concept of a creature that persists and adapts upon death, rewarding players with a powerful 'death trigger' that searches the library for creatures with a combined cost of six or less.

The illustration was created by artist Heather Hudson, whose work is synonymous with the fantasy aesthetic of mid-2000s Magic. Hudson utilized a distinct, painterly style to depict the massive, shifting form of the beast, emphasizing its organic and fluid nature to align with the Simic guild's philosophy of constant change. Upon its release, the card was initially viewed as a high-mana casual threat, though it eventually became a subject of significant competitive discussion due to its ability to facilitate complex, game-ending combos in various formats.
