What it does

If a source an opponent controls would deal damage to you, prevent 1 of that damage.

Part of the acolytes' training is to walk along the Hekma, staring out at the ravenous horrors kept at bay by the God-Pharaoh's barrier.

Provenance

Where it came from

Protection of the Hekma is a white enchantment card released in the 2017 Magic: The Gathering expansion, Amonkhet. The set was heavily inspired by Ancient Egyptian mythology, depicting a plane of existence ruled by the dragon planeswalker Nicol Bolas. Mechanically, the card was designed to represent the impenetrable magical barrier that protects the city of Naktamun from the horrors of the desert wastes, providing players with a defensive advantage by reducing damage dealt by sources controlled by opponents.

The card’s artwork was illustrated by Magali Villeneuve, a prominent figure in the fantasy art world. Villeneuve focused on capturing the ethereal, glowing geometry of the Hekma, contrasting the light of the barrier against the dark, encroaching atmosphere of the surrounding dunes. Upon its release, the card was noted for its flavor-driven design, though it saw limited competitive play, primarily finding a home in limited formats and thematic casual decks focused on defense.
