Where it came from
Psychic Trance was released in 2002 as part of the Onslaught expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set marked a return to the creature-focused gameplay that defined the early years of the game, introducing the tribal mechanic which encouraged players to build decks around specific creature types. The card reflects the set's broader exploration of themes involving sacrifice and internal power struggles within the game's mechanics.
The artwork for the card was created by artist Greg Staples, whose dark, atmospheric style helped establish the moody tone of the Onslaught block. By depicting the psychological toll of tapping into forbidden knowledge, the illustration aligns with the card's function as a black mana spell. Upon release, it was regarded as a niche utility card, primarily finding a place in casual decks that experimented with hand manipulation and graveyard synergy rather than high-tier competitive formats.
