Where it came from
Puca's Covenant was released as part of the Lorwyn Eclipsed Commander collection, a set that draws heavily from the folklore-inspired themes established in the original 2007 Lorwyn expansion. The set explores the darker, more whimsical undertones of the plane, focusing on the changeling and faerie tribes that define the setting's aesthetic. The card reflects the lore of Puca, mischievous shapeshifters in Celtic mythology, designed to embody the themes of mimicry and reciprocal magical bargains central to the expansion's mechanical identity.
The artistic direction for this piece emphasizes the ethereal and deceptive nature of the creature, utilizing a muted, dreamlike color palette characteristic of the Lorwyn block. Illustrators working on this set were tasked with conveying the 'sunlit horror' aesthetic, where beauty masks an underlying, unsettling edge. Upon its introduction, the card was noted for its thematic cohesion and its ability to capture the complex, shifting nature of folklore creatures within the game's competitive framework.
