Where it came from
Pure Reflection was released in 2000 as part of the Invasion expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, the set was designed to move away from the high-complexity mechanics of the preceding block, focusing instead on a thematic return to multicolor cards and the overarching storyline of the Phyrexian invasion of the plane of Dominaria. The card reflects the set's emphasis on creature-based combat and board-state manipulation.
The artwork for Pure Reflection was created by artist Christopher Rush, a legendary figure in the early years of the game. His illustration depicts a shimmering, spectral mirror effect that mirrors the card's mechanical ability to turn creatures entering the battlefield into copies of themselves. Upon its release, the card was viewed primarily as a niche tactical tool, celebrated by players for its ability to neutralize unique creature effects by standardizing the battlefield.
