Where it came from
Purphoros, God of the Forge was released in 2013 as part of the Theros set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was inspired by Greek mythology, casting the gods of the plane as powerful, enchantment-based creatures that require the devotion of the player's board state to manifest physically. Purphoros represents the god of the forge, reflecting themes of creation, craftsmanship, and destructive heat.
The card's striking visual identity was crafted by artist Eric Deschamps, who utilized a bold, radiant palette to convey the deity’s fiery nature. His design focuses on the industrial and volcanic aspects of the character, emphasizing a sense of divine power and artistry. Upon its release, the card gained significant traction in competitive Commander and Eternal formats due to its potent ability to deal direct damage to opponents whenever creatures enter the battlefield.
