Pyrotechnics

Pyrotechnics was originally introduced to the Magic: The Gathering card game in the Fifth Edition core set, which was released in 1997. As part of a core set, it functioned as a functional reprint or inclusion of cards meant to define the standard play environment of the era. The card itself represents the red mana philosophy of direct damage, acting as a flexible spell that allows players to distribute a specific amount of fire-based damage among any number of targets.

The artwork for this version was provided by Jeff Miracola, whose illustrative style during the mid-nineties leaned into a dynamic, visceral aesthetic. The design goal was to visually convey the chaotic and explosive nature of a pyrotechnic display while maintaining the technical requirements of a spell card. Upon its release, it was regarded as a quintessential utility card for red decks, prized for its ability to clear multiple small creatures from the battlefield simultaneously.
