Where it came from
Questing Phelddagrif was released in 2001 as part of the Planeshift expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It was designed as a direct sequel to the original Phelddagrif from the Alliances set, continuing the theme of the whimsical, flying purple hippo deity that acts as a pacifist-leaning group hug card. The design intent focused on providing players with a versatile, multi-colored creature that incentivizes political gameplay by granting opponents small boons in exchange for powerful defensive or offensive capabilities.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Amy Weber, who captured the creature's surreal, playful essence in a lush, fantasy-inspired setting. Within the competitive community, the card is remembered for its unique mechanical identity, which intentionally subverts the typical aggressive nature of Magic creatures. It has become a cult favorite among players who favor non-combative, collaborative, or control-oriented strategies, particularly in the Commander format where its friendly, unpredictable nature shines.
