Rag Man

Rag Man was originally introduced in the Dark expansion of Magic: The Gathering in 1994, with the version 151 appearing in the 1999 Sixth Edition core set. This set marked a significant transition for the game, as it was the first to implement the 'Sixth Edition rules,' which introduced major mechanical updates to combat and the stack to streamline gameplay. The card itself represents the black mana color's theme of disruption, specifically forcing opponents to discard cards at random.

The artwork for the Sixth Edition printing features a haunting illustration by artist Anson Maddocks. Maddocks was one of the original artists involved in the game’s inception, known for a darker, more visceral aesthetic that defined the visual identity of early Magic sets. His depiction of the Rag Man serves to illustrate the card's ability to strip resources from an opponent's hand, embodying the grim, attrition-based style of play favored by black-aligned decks during the game's formative years.
