Raging River

Raging River was first introduced in the Limited Edition Alpha and Beta sets of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, with the Unlimited Edition release following shortly thereafter in late 1993 as the game's first print run for the mass market. Designed by Richard Garfield, the card was part of a cycle of cards intended to introduce complex, board-altering mechanics that favored strategic risk-taking. As a red enchantment, it forces players to engage in a unique sub-game involving the division of creatures into two piles, reflecting the chaotic and unpredictable nature of the elemental force it represents.

The art for Raging River was illustrated by Christopher Rush, one of the most prolific early contributors to the game’s aesthetic identity. Rush utilized a visceral, high-contrast style that helped define the early visual language of the trading card game. While the card is mechanically dense and was often considered difficult to navigate in casual play, it remains a significant piece of Magic history, representing the experimental design philosophy of the game's earliest years before standardized mechanics were fully solidified.
