Raging River

Raging River was originally introduced as a rare card in the Limited Edition Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield. The card features art by Douglas Shuler and is notable for its unique, complex mechanics involving a coin-flip minigame that creates a sense of chaos on the battlefield. Its design was intended to represent the unpredictable nature of an aggressive red-aligned spell, forcing opponents to split their blocking creatures into two distinct piles.

The Collectors' Edition version, released in late 1993, was a non-tournament-legal boxed set produced for the general public, serving as a display-only replica of the core game. Distinguished by square corners and gold-ink stamping on the reverse side, this edition allowed players and collectors to own cards that had already become prohibitively expensive or scarce in the original printing. While it was not intended for competitive play, it remains a significant historical artifact of the game's early expansion period.
