Rakdos Augermage

Rakdos Augermage was released in 2006 as part of the Dissension expansion, the final set in the Ravnica block for Magic: The Gathering. The card represents the Rakdos Cult, a chaotic and hedonistic guild on the plane of Ravnica characterized by black and red mana. Its design reflects the 'hellbent' mechanic introduced in this set, which grants mechanical bonuses when the player has no cards in their hand, reinforcing the guild's theme of reckless, impulsive destruction.

The artwork was illustrated by Greg Staples, who captures the grotesque and sinister aesthetic central to the Rakdos identity. Staples rendered the character with an emphasis on the dark, theatrical, and violent nature of the cult, utilizing a moody palette that helped define the visual language of the guild. Upon release, the card was received as a niche but thematic inclusion for aggressive black-red decks, particularly those built to exploit the high-risk, high-reward playstyle demanded by the hellbent ability.
