Provenance

Where it came from

Rakdos the Defiler was released in 2006 as part of the Dissension expansion, the final set in the original Ravnica: City of Guilds block for Magic: The Gathering. As a legendary demon representing the Rakdos Cult, the card was designed to embody the chaotic, destructive, and hedonistic nature of the guild, utilizing a high-risk, high-reward mechanic that forces players to sacrifice their own permanents alongside their opponent's.

The art was created by Aleksi Briclot, a prominent illustrator known for his dramatic, dark fantasy style. Briclot depicted the demon with a formidable, grotesque presence that captures the violent energy of the character's lore. Upon its release, the card became a focal point for players interested in aggressive deck archetypes and eventually found a lasting home in the Commander format, where its ability to swing the board state remains highly influential.
