Provenance

Where it came from

Rapacious One was released in 2010 as part of the Rise of the Eldrazi set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set marked the conclusion of the Zendikar block, centering on the emergence of the Eldrazi, ancient and incomprehensible entities that consume entire planes of existence. Mechanically, the card was designed to demonstrate the 'eldrazi spawn' token mechanic, which allowed players to accelerate their mana production to cast the set's massive, high-cost creatures.

The card was illustrated by Mike Dringenberg, a veteran artist known for his work on the Sandman comic series. Dringenberg’s approach for the Eldrazi was intended to emphasize their alien, grotesque anatomy, moving away from traditional fantasy tropes like dragons or demons. Upon release, the card was well-regarded by limited-format players for its utility in ramping resources and its ability to act as a significant threat in mid-to-late game board states.
