Where it came from
Training Grounds was released in 2010 as part of the Rise of the Eldrazi expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set focused on the emergence of the colossal, otherworldly Eldrazi titans, and this enchantment was designed as an uncommon utility card intended to support the set's complex board states. It reflects the mechanical theme of reducing costs, specifically targeting the activation fees of creature abilities, which became a staple tool for combo-oriented players.
The artwork was created by illustrator Matt Cavotta, who utilized a soft, ethereal aesthetic to depict a meditative space suited to the card's theme of skill refinement. In the competitive scene, the card was initially viewed as a niche build-around piece, but it gradually gained significant notoriety as new creature abilities were printed in subsequent expansions. It is now considered a fundamental engine in various Eternal formats, highly regarded by players for its efficiency in enabling powerful creature-based combos.
