Where it came from
Rasaad yn Bashir was introduced as a legendary creature card in the 2022 expansion Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate. The set was designed to integrate the rich lore and characters of the Dungeons & Dragons Forgotten Realms setting into the Magic: The Gathering trading card game, specifically catering to the social Commander format. Rasaad, a Monk of Selûne, was featured to represent the class-based mechanics introduced in this expansion, allowing players to build thematic decks around D&D archetypes.
The character illustration was executed by artist Wisnu Tan, who aimed to capture the tranquil yet martial essence of a moon-touched monk. The design leans into the aesthetics of the Forgotten Realms, emphasizing Rasaad's unique gear and connection to Selûne. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players focusing on 'Voltron' style strategies, where the goal is to enhance a single legendary creature, due to his ability to convert defensive toughness into offensive power.
