Provenance

Where it came from

Rath's Edge was released in the year 2000 as part of the Nemesis expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set served as the second chapter of the Rath Cycle, depicting the final stages of the Phyrexians' invasion of the plane of Rath. The card represents a geographical manifestation of the artificial plane's instability, fitting into a set characterized by themes of mechanical corruption and the encroaching influence of the Phyrexian empire.

The artwork for the card was created by Ron Spencer, a prominent illustrator whose bold, high-contrast style defined much of the visual identity of Magic during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Spencer sought to capture the jagged, unnatural landscape of Rath with a sense of ominous urgency. While Rath's Edge was viewed primarily as a functional utility land in competitive play, it remains a notable example of Spencer's contribution to the darker, more industrial aesthetic that defined the game's shift toward complex, narrative-driven expansions.
