Where it came from
The Ray Fillet action figure was released in 1990 by Playmates Toys as part of the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles toy line. Created during the height of the franchise's popularity, the character was designed to expand the underwater roster of the series, drawing inspiration from the animated show's adventurous tone. The design features a distinct anthropomorphic manta ray aesthetic, complete with signature gear that reflected the whimsical, often mutated nature of the characters released during this era of the toy line.
The character, originally known as Man Ray in the comics, was developed by artist Ryan Brown and writer Stephen Murphy. The toy adaptation moved away from the darker, more serious roots of the Mirage Studios comic source material to fit the vibrant, mass-market appeal of the Playmates collection. Upon its release, it became a staple of the 'Mutations' wave, remembered by collectors for its unique sculpt and the detailed fin accessories that distinguished it from the more standard bipedal characters in the set.
