Where it came from
Reaper's Scythe originates from the Final Fantasy Commander deck, a 2024 collaborative release between Magic: The Gathering and the long-running video game franchise. This artifact equipment card reflects the design philosophy of the set, which aims to translate iconic weaponry and thematic elements from various Final Fantasy titles into the mechanics of Magic: The Gathering, specifically catering to the Commander multiplayer format.
The card was designed to embody the dark, utility-focused aesthetics associated with its namesake within the franchise. The visual direction emphasizes a grim, high-fantasy tone consistent with the source material, balancing the requirements of modern card aesthetics with the nostalgic design cues expected by long-term fans of both properties. It serves as a functional tool for gameplay, allowing players to equip creatures to gain combat advantages, reflecting the tactical depth prevalent in the Final Fantasy series.
