Reconnaissance originated as a rare card in the 1998 Exodus expansion for Magic: The Gathering, designed by Richard Garfield to offer players a unique utility for attacking creatures. Its ability to remove a creature from combat after damage has been dealt created a potent tactical advantage, allowing players to protect their creatures while reaping the benefits of combat triggers. The card became a staple in Commander formats due to its versatility, eventually prompting Wizards of the Coast to include it in the Secret Lair series as a way to provide updated aesthetics for older, high-demand cards.

This specific iteration, released as part of a Secret Lair Drop, features distinct, stylized artwork by Josh Newton and Scott Okumura.
