Recurring Nightmare

Recurring Nightmare was released in 1998 as part of the Exodus expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Designed by Mike Elliott, the card was developed during a period when the game was rapidly expanding its mechanical complexity. It was intended to provide a powerful engine for graveyard recursion, allowing players to exchange creatures on the battlefield with those in their graveyard, a strategy that quickly became a hallmark of black-aligned deck construction.

The card features iconic artwork by Kev Walker, whose gritty and visceral style helped define the aesthetic of late-nineties Magic sets. Walker's illustration depicts a haunting, cyclical descent that visually captures the card's mechanical ability to recycle threats.
