Where it came from
Recurring Nightmare was released in 1998 as part of the Exodus expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As the third and final set in the Rath Cycle, Exodus was designed to conclude the storyline involving the plane of Rath and introduced mechanics that rewarded players for interacting with their graveyards. The card quickly became a centerpiece of competitive play due to its ability to cycle creatures between the battlefield and the graveyard, effectively negating removal spells and triggering 'enters the battlefield' effects repeatedly.
The artwork for the card was created by Jeff Laubenstein, a veteran illustrator known for his contributions to both Magic: The Gathering and various tabletop role-playing games. His depiction of a shadowy, unsettling figure rising from a grave perfectly captured the dark, visceral tone of the Rath setting. Upon its release, the card was received as a uniquely powerful engine, though its efficiency eventually led to its banning in several tournament formats due to its tendency to create oppressive gameplay loops.
