Where it came from
Reject Imperfection was released in early 2023 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set Phyrexia: All Will Be One. The card depicts the central conflict of the narrative arc, where the biomechanical forces of New Phyrexia seek to convert the inhabitants of the multiverse into followers of the machine god Elesh Norn. The spell is mechanically designed as a counterspell that reinforces the blue mana faction's resistance to the encroaching phyresis, reflecting the struggle between autonomy and forced evolution.
The artwork was created by illustrator Matt Stewart, who has contributed extensively to the Magic: The Gathering card game. Stewart was tasked with visualizing the high-stakes moment of rejecting phyrexian corruption, utilizing a stark color palette to contrast the glistening, oily aesthetic of the phyrexians against the remnants of organic resistance. The card design was received by players as a functional staple for control-oriented decks during its tenure in the Standard rotation.
