Where it came from
Relic Vial was released in 2020 as part of the Zendikar Rising expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to support the 'party' mechanic, a thematic centerpiece of the set that rewards players for controlling a specific configuration of creature types—Cleric, Rogue, Warrior, and Wizard. Mechanically, the card reflects the adventurous, tomb-raiding spirit of Zendikar, allowing players to sacrifice creatures to drain opponents as they explore the plane's dangerous ruins.
The artwork, illustrated by Igor Kieryluk, depicts an ornate, glowing vessel consistent with the aesthetic of Zendikar’s ancient Kor civilizations. Kieryluk’s design focuses on the ethereal, magical quality of the relic, emphasizing its role as a focal point for the set's treasure-hunting narrative. Upon release, it was received as a niche utility artifact, primarily utilized in decks specifically built around party synergy or Aristocrats-style sacrifice strategies.
