Remorseful Cleric

Remorseful Cleric was released in July 2018 as part of the Core Set 2019 expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a core set, the release was designed to provide a foundational entry point for new players while offering reprints and new mechanics that balanced standard gameplay. The cleric was specifically introduced as an efficient tool for graveyard interaction, reflecting a design shift toward providing utility creatures that could serve as both a defensive body and a reactive answer to opponent strategies.

The card’s art was illustrated by Johannes Voss, a long-time contributor to the game known for his evocative and atmospheric style. Voss aimed to capture the theme of penance and sacrifice, depicting a figure shedding their worldly burdens to cleanse the battlefield of past transgressions. Upon release, the card was well-received by the competitive community, particularly in Constructed formats, where its ability to exile graveyards at instant speed provided necessary counter-play against strategies centered on recursion.
