Provenance

Where it came from

Remote Isle was originally printed in the Urza's Saga set in 1998 as part of a cycle of lands that return a basic land to their owner's hand as a drawback for their ability to tap for two mana of a specific color. This mechanic, known as the 'bouncelands' or 'depletion lands,' was designed to balance the card's mana-acceleration potential. The card has since been reprinted in various supplemental products, including the Commander 2020 preconstructed decks, which serves to make older, utility-focused cards more accessible to players in the popular Commander format.

The art for the original Remote Isle, carried forward through many reprints including the Commander 2020 version, was illustrated by Donato Giancola. Giancola focused on an ethereal, isolated aesthetic to match the card's namesake. His work on this land is frequently noted for its atmospheric quality, capturing a sense of solitary magic that has helped the card remain a recognizable piece of early Magic: The Gathering history despite its functional nature as a standard utility land.
