Renegade Demon

Renegade Demon was released in May 2012 as part of the Avacyn Restored set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set marked the conclusion of the Innistrad block, a gothic horror-inspired plane defined by dark forests, vampire lords, and the influence of the archangel Avacyn. The card was designed as a common-rarity creature to provide a standard gameplay experience within the limited draft environment, where its simple ability to drain an opponent's life upon entering the battlefield served to reinforce the set's themes of macabre attrition.

The artwork was commissioned from illustrator Tomasz Jedruszek, a recurring contributor to the franchise known for his moody, atmospheric style. Jedruszek captured the raw, unsettling aesthetic of the setting by depicting the demon with jagged, organic features that contrast against the stark, somber backdrop typical of Innistrad. The design was intended to evoke the terrifying nature of the plane's demonic incursions, and while it remained a functional staple for casual play rather than a competitive powerhouse, the illustration was well-received by fans for its cohesion with the block's pervasive, gloomy art direction.
