Where it came from
Renounce the Guilds was released in 2013 as part of the Dragon's Maze expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card serves as a thematic conclusion to the Return to Ravnica block, which emphasized the ten two-color guilds of the plane. Mechanically, the card forces each player to sacrifice a multicolored permanent, representing the political instability and crumbling alliances that defined the set's narrative as the guilds of Ravnica turned against one another.
The artwork was commissioned from illustrator Lucas Graciano, who focused on capturing the chaotic atmosphere of the guild-focused city. Graciano utilized a painterly style to depict the literal renunciation of allegiance, emphasizing the tension inherent in the dissolution of established power structures. Upon release, the card saw moderate play in formats where multicolored permanents were abundant, as players sought efficient ways to navigate the complex board states characteristic of the Ravnica plane.
