Where it came from
The Resplendent Griffin was released in early 2018 as part of the Rivals of Ixalan expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a centerpiece of the set's white color identity, the card reflects the aesthetic of the Sun Empire, a civilization inspired by Mesoamerican cultures, which serves as a primary faction in the plane of Ixalan. It was conceived as a limited-environment staple, designed to provide players with a resilient aerial threat that emphasizes the game's mechanics of reanimation and recursion.
The card’s artwork was illustrated by Sidharth Chaturvedi, who utilized a vibrant, warm palette to convey the regal and avian nature of the creature. The design focuses on the griffin as a guardian figure, aligning with the narrative arc of the Sun Empire's efforts to reclaim their golden city, Orazca. Upon release, the card was well-received by draft players for its consistent performance and clear utility, serving as a reliable example of mid-tier creature design within the modern Magic: The Gathering ecosystem.
