Restless Dreams

Restless Dreams was released in 2002 as part of the Torment expansion set for Magic: The Gathering. The set is uniquely remembered for its heavy mechanical emphasis on the color black, a departure from the typical balance of game sets, which served to reflect the dark, subterranean setting of the plane of Otaria where the story unfolded. The card was designed as a low-cost utility sorcery, allowing players to discard cards to retrieve creature cards from their graveyard, a strategic tool meant to support graveyard-centric play styles.

The artwork for the card was created by illustrator John Matson. Known for his atmospheric and often macabre style, Matson was tasked with capturing the evocative theme of recurring nightmares. His design depicts a surreal, shadowy figure emerging from a bed, visually anchoring the card's function of resurfacing discarded memories or creatures. Upon its release, the card became a staple for casual and niche graveyard-interaction decks, appreciated for its efficiency and thematic alignment with the morbid tone of the Torment set.
