Where it came from
Rhox Faithmender was released in the Magic 2013 core set in July 2012, designed to emphasize the white mana color identity of life-gain and defensive resilience. As a Rhox—a humanoid rhinoceros creature native to the plane of Alara—the card fits into a long-standing lineage of durable, strength-oriented creatures within the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. Its core mechanic, which doubles the amount of life a player gains, was crafted to provide a high-impact board presence for casual and mid-range decks that rely on survival-based strategies.
The card’s illustration was created by artist James Zapata, who utilized dramatic lighting and a sense of stoic gravity to convey the character's role as a protector. The design sought to balance the creature’s inherently aggressive, bulky rhinoceros form with the spiritual, healing aesthetic associated with white-aligned magic. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players focusing on life-gain archetypes, becoming a staple in Commander formats for its ability to exponentially scale the effectiveness of defensive spells.
