Rhox War Monk

Rhox War Monk was released in 2008 as part of the Shards of Alara expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set introduced the concept of 'shards,' which were three-color factions representing different planes of existence. The card represents the Bant shard, a peaceful, meritocratic society characterized by the colors white, green, and blue. Mechanically, the card was designed to highlight the intersection of these colors, combining aggressive combat abilities with life-gain to reward the color identity of the Bant faction.

The artwork was commissioned from illustrator Dan Dos Santos, who sought to capture the stoic and disciplined nature of the Rhox—a race of rhinoceros-folk known for their imposing stature and spiritual martial arts. Dos Santos utilized a dynamic composition to emphasize the monk’s readiness for battle while maintaining a sense of serene resolve. Upon its release, the card became a staple in competitive formats of the time, widely praised by players for its efficient stat-line and reliability as a mid-game threat.
